BYU Football Visits San Diego State Saturday

SAN DIEGO-Saturday, BYU football (7-4) visits San Diego State (8-3) in a match-up of longtime conference rivals at San Diego County Credit Union Stadium.

Cougars head coach Kalani Sitake  is currently 27-23 (.540) in his fourth season at the helm of the BYU program.

After routing Massachusetts 56-24 Saturday, the Cougars are 61st nationally in scoring offense (30.3 points per game).

Sophomore signal-caller Zach Wilson completed 17 of 20 passes for 293 yards and four scores for the Cougars in the rout of the Minutemen.

Wilson is currently completing 63.7 percent of his passes (144-226) for 1,792 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Freshman tailback Sione Finau (59 car, 359 yards, 2 TD’s) and senior receiver Micah Simon (41 rec, 514 yards, 2 TD’s) have also come on of late. Junior tight end Matt Bushman (35 rec, 538 yards, 4 TD’s) is tied for the team lead in scoring receptions with senior receiver Talon Shumway (34 rec, 456 yards, 4 TD’s).

Sophomore kicker/punter Jake Oldroyd (14 of 21 on field goals, 36 of 37 on PAT’s) leads the Cougars in the kicking game.

The Cougars surrender 25.5 points per game, tying them for 54th nationally in scoring defense with Oklahoma.

Junior linebacker Kavika Fonua leads BYU in total tackles with 71. Sophomore defensive lineman Lorenzo Fauatea leads the Cougars in sacks with 2 and freshman linebacker Payton Wilgar leads the squad with three interceptions.

Fonua, senior defensive back Dayan Ghanwoloku, sophomore linebacker Chaz Ah You, freshman linebacker Tyler Allgeier, Fauatea, senior defensive lineman JJ Nwigwe, senior defensive back Austin Kafentzis and freshman receiver Koy Harris all have a forced fumble on the season for the Cougars.

In his ninth year at San Diego State, head coach Rocky Long (79-38, .675 at San Diego State; 144-107 (.574) in his coaching career) has led the Aztecs to a winning record every season.

San Diego State missed out on a berth in the Mountain West Championship game Saturday at Hawaii, dropping a narrow 14-11 decision at Aloha Stadium.

The Aztecs score 19.5 points per game which ranks them 118th nationally.

Senior signal-caller Ryan Agnew completes 63.5 percent of his passes (216-340) for 2,175 yards, 11 touchdowns and 5 interceptions on the season.

Senior tailback/kick returner Juwan Washington (140 car, 474 yards, 2 TD’s) and junior back Chase Jasmin (62 car, 271 yards, 3 TD’s) lead the Aztecs’ running game.

Sophomore receiver Kobe Smith (54 rec, 654 yards, 4 TD’s) leads San Diego State in the receiving department.

Redshirt freshman kicker/punter Matt Araiza has made 18 of his 22 field goal attempts on the season and all 21 of his PAT attempts.

The Aztecs surrender 13.7 points per game, ranking them sixth nationally.

Senior linebacker Kyahva Tezino leads the Aztecs with 89 total tackles and has also posted 3 sacks and two forced fumbles. He is tied for the team lead in forced fumbles with sophomore corner-back Darren Hall.

Senior defensive lineman Myles Cheatum leads the squad with 5 sacks while redshirt defensive lineman Cameron Thomas and sophomore defensive lineman Keshawn Banks have 4.5 sacks apiece on the season to bolster the Aztecs’ pass rush.

Senior corner-back Luq Barcoo has a team-high 8 interceptions and also has him tied for the national lead with Texas Tech defensive back Douglas Coleman III.

The Cougars’ series against the Aztecs dates back to 1947 with BYU leading 28-7-1 all-time, including 11-5-1 at San Diego.
