AMHERST, Mass.-Saturday, BYU football (6-4) plays its penultimate game of the regular season at Amherst, Mass. against the UMASS Minutemen (1-10), in this rare battle of FBS independents.
Monday, BYU head coach Kalani Sitake was inked to a contract extension through 2023. He is currently 26-23 (.531) as the Cougars’ head coach, having been at the post since 2016.
In Saturday’s successful 42-10 Senior Day win over FCS foe Idaho State, sophomore signal-caller Zach Wilson (19-31, 187 yards, 2 TD’s/INT) returned to the lineup, faring well against the Bengals.
Wilson has now completed 61.7 percent of his passes on the season (127-206) for 1,499 yards, 7 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.
With 102 rushing yards against Idaho State, freshman tailback Sione Finau (59 car, 359 yards, 2 TD’s) is the Cougars’ leading rusher on the season.
Senior receiver Micah Simon (39 rec, 494 yards, 2 TD’s) is now BYU’s leading receiver on the season, having come on of late.
Sophomore kicker Jake Oldroyd has made 14 of his 20 field goals on the season for the Cougars and 29 of his 30 PAT attempts.
The Cougars average 27.7 points per game, ranking them 76th nationally in scoring offense.
Defensively, the Cougars surrender 25.6 points per game, ranking them 51st nationally in scoring defense. They are tied with Michigan State and Oklahoma in scoring defense.
Sophomore defensive lineman Lorenzo Fauatea has 2 sacks to pace the Cougars, while freshman linebacker Payton Wilgar has three interceptions to lead BYU in that category.
In his first season as the Minutemen’s head coach, Walt Bell is currently 1-10 (.091).
UMASS scores 19.4 points per game, ranking them 114th nationally.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Andrew Brito completes 54.7 percent of his passes (88 of 161) for 7 touchdowns and 6 interceptions for the Minutemen.
The Minutemen’s running game is led by redshirt junior tailback Bilal Ally (140 car, 726 yards, 6 TD’s, 5.2 yards per carry).
Freshman receiver Jermaine “OC” Johnson Jr. (35 rec, 281 yards, 2 TD’s) is UMASS’ leader in receptions. Redshirt senior tight end Kyle Horn (13 rec, 161 yards) is the team leader in scoring receptions (3) and yards per catch (12.4 yards).
Redshirt senior kicker Cooper Garcia has made 6 of 8 field goal attempts and 27 of his 28 PAT’s on the season for the Minutemen.
Defensively, UMASS is last nationally in scoring defense and total defense, ranking 130th by surrendering 52.4 points and 555.1 yards per game respectively.
The Cougars lead the Minutemen 2-1 all-time, including 1-0 as the road team.
