KNOXVILLE, Tenn.-Saturday, 0-1 BYU football meets 0-1 Tennessee at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. at 5:00 pm MDT.
This game will be broadcast on KSVC AM 980 and 100.5 FM.
This is the first time in each of these programs’ respective histories that they have met on the gridiron.
Despite falling 30-12 to Utah August 29, the Cougars have only dropped to 0-2 four times in the last 50 years. These ignominious starts occurred in 1974, 1975, 1991 and 1995.
The Cougars are 6-7 all-time against current members of the SEC.
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake is in his fourth season at the helm in Provo and currently sporting a 20-20 record.
The Cougars are currently 113th nationally in scoring offense with 12 points per game while the Volunteers are 67th in scoring offense at 30 points a game. BYU’s scoring defense currently is 79th nationally in giving up 30 points to Utah. By virtue of surrendering 38 points to Georgia State Saturday, Tennessee is 122nd nationally.
In the season-opening loss to the Utes, BYU sophomore signal-caller Zach Wilson went 21-33 (62.6 completion percentage) for 208 yards and two interceptions, each of which were returned for scores.
Graduate transfer Ty’Son Williams ran for 48 yards on 7 carries (6.4 yards per snap) and ran for a score against Utah to lead the Cougars’ running backs.
BYU’s leading receiver against the Utes was junior tight end Matt Bushman (6 rec, 62 yards).
Senior linebacker Zayne Anderson led the Cougars with 7 tackles, 6 of which were unassisted.
In their 38-30 loss to Georgia State, the Volunteers were led by redshirt junior quarterback Jarrett Guarantano, who went 26-40 (completing 65 percent of his passes) for 311 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception.
The leading rusher for Tennessee in the loss was junior tailback Ty Chandler (6 car, 50 yards, TD) who averaged 8 yards per snap.
Reshirt senior receiver Jauan Jennings led the Volunteers in receiving Saturday with 7 grabs for 108 yards and a score.
Junior defensive back Shawn Shamburger led Tennessee Saturday with one sack and a tackle for a loss against the Panthers.
