Tuesday evening, BYU football was ranked No. 14 in the first college football playoff rankings released for the 2020 season.
A four-team playoff format currently exists in NCAA the FBS subdivision, the highest level of Division I college football.
Therefore, if the playoff were to start today, the teams that would be in the playoffs are as follows:
No. 1 Alabama (7-0)
No. 2 Notre Dame (8-0)
No. 3 Clemson (7-1)
No. 4 Ohio State (4-0).
The next four teams in the rankings are as follows
No. 5 Texas A&M (5-1)
No. 6 Florida (6-1)
No. 7 Cincinnati (8-0)
No. 8 Northwestern (5-0).
The Cougars face a steep path toward obtaining a berth in the college football playoff as they only have one more game scheduled this season: a home contest against San Diego State that is currently scheduled for LaVell Edwards Stadium December 12.
BYU would also need to surpass No. 9 Georgia (5-2), No. 10 Miami (Fla.) (7-1), No. 11 Oklahoma (6-2), No. 12 Indiana (4-1) and No. 13 Iowa State (6-2) at this stage to have a chance at making this playoff.
