PROVO, Utah-BYU football (5-4) celebrates Senior Day Saturday by hosting the Idaho State Bengals (3-7, 2-5 in Big Sky Conference play) at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
19 seniors will be honored as the Cougars seek to make themselves bowl eligible. In his fourth season at the helm, head coach Kalini Sitake is currently 25-23 (.521) in leading the program.
BYU ranks 85th in scoring offense (26.1 points per game) nationally.
Freshman signal-caller Baylor Romney completes 63.5 percent of his passes (54-85) for 747 yards, 7 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
Freshman tailback Sione Finau (43 car, 257 yards, TD) continues to improve while junior tight end Matt Bushman (32 rec, 484 yards, TD) has been the stabilizing force for a BYU offense that has suffered a litany of injuries.
Sophomore kicker Jake Oldroyd has made 14 of his 19 field goal attempts on the season and 23 of his 24 PAT attempts for the Cougars.
The Cougars’ scoring defense ranks 67th in the nation (27.3 points per game), tying them with Utah State.
Sophomore defensive lineman Lorenzo Fauatea leads the Cougars in sacks (2) and freshman linebacker Payton Wilgar has 3 interceptions to lead the squad.
Junior linebacker Kavika Fonua, sophomore linebacker Chaz Ah You, freshman linebacker Tyler Allgeier, Fauatea, senior defensive lineman JJ Nwigwe and senior defensive back Austin Kafentzis (forced fumble apiece) all lead the Cougars in that statistic.
Idaho State is coached by third-year head coach Rob Phenicie who is 13-19 (.406) at the helm at Pocatello.
The Bengals score 27.2 points per game and are led by junior quarterback Matt Struck.
Struck completes 52.7 percent of his passes (126-239) for 1,912 yards, 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions on the season.
Senior tailback Ty Flanagan (169 car, 877 yards, 5 TD’s) leads the Bengals on the ground and the leading receivers are junior wide-out Tanner Conner (39 rec, 656 yards, 8 TD’s) and senior receiver Michael Dean (36 rec, 610 yards, 5 TD’s).
Sophomore kicker Kevin Ryan has made 10 of his 13 field goal attempts and 25 of his 27 PAT’s for the Bengals.
The Idaho State defense surrenders 32.2 points per game.
Senior linebacker Luke Holloway is the Bengals’ defensive leader, netting the team lead in sacks (6.5) and forced fumbles (3).
