BYU Baseball Commences Season Friday

SURPRISE, Ariz.-Friday, BYU baseball commences its 2020 campaign Friday at the Sanderson Tournament against fellow West Coast Conference foe Gonzaga.

While at this tournament, the Cougars will also square off against New Mexico, in a twin-bill Saturday, and conclude the series Monday against Oregon State.

BYU is coached by head coach Mike Littlewood, who is 215-160 (.573) entering his eighth season at the helm of the program.

Friday, against Gonzaga, the Cougars will ride with junior right-hander Justin Sterner, a native of Laguna Niguel, Calif. Last season, Sterner went 8-4 on the mound and posted a 2.95 ERA.

The Bulldogs are coached by 16-year head coach Mark Machtolf (2004-present) who is 481-387-3 (.554) as Gonzaga’s head coach. The Bulldogs lead the Cougars 29-25 all-time.

Saturday, BYU will go with freshman left-hander Cy Nielson in the first game and junior right-hander Easton Walker for the second game against New Mexico.

The Lobos are coached by 12-year skipper Ray Birmingham (2008-present) who is 384-312-4 (.551) as New Mexico’s head coach. The Cougars lead the Lobos 77-56-1 all-time.

Senior right-handed pitcher Jarod Lessar will get the nod against the Beavers Monday.

Oregon State will be breaking in a new head coach during this tournament as Mitch Canham was hired to the post at Corvallis, Ore. this past June. He has previously been a manager in the Seattle Mariners’ organization. The Beavers lead the Cougars 15-6 all-time.

The Cougars look to be led by returning all-West Coast Conference outfielder, junior Mitch McIntyre (38 RBI; .291 batting average in 2019), fellow junior outfielder Danny Gelalich (16 RBI, a .328 batting average in 2019) and senior catcher Abraham Valdez (14 RBI, a .288 batting average in 2019).
