Woman afraid of Mexican Mafia causes tense situation in Richfield Sunday

A Richfield woman is now in the Sevier County Jail and her 6-month-old baby is with Child Protective Services after a tense situation Sunday afternoon on Main Street.

According to Richfield City Police Chief Trent Lloyd, 40-year-0ld Sherri Martin was intoxicated with some sort of drug or mixture of drugs.  He says she was near 400 South and Main when someone called authorities because she was acting strangely and talking about the Mexican Mafia wanting to take her baby.

When officers arrived, she acted as if the officers were the mafia. Martin refused to speak with officers and ran into Main Street. She eventually ended up behind the All Washed Up Laundromat, where a brick wall kept her from running.

Lloyd says officers were mostly concerned for the safety of the baby who was being whipped around pretty roughly by Martin.

A neighbor behind the Laundromat was able to speak to Martin while officers tried to surround her. Chief Lloyd arrived on scene still in a suit from church and Martin spoke with him a bit. He described her as acting possessed.

Lloyd says Troy Campbell with the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office was able to get behind Martin and together they reached her and got the baby from her safely.

The child was checked out by EMTs and is uninjured. Martin is facing charges of reckless endangerment of a child, intoxication and disorderly conduct.

Lloyd says things just worked out and is praising all the officers and neighbor who were able to help.
