Update: Apr. 7
As of the morning of Apr. 7 the fire is 25% contained and has burned roughly 700 acres. It was determined that this fire was caused by a legal permitted burn. The person followed the instructions with one exception, they failed to make sure the burn was cold to the touch. Winds gusting to 35 mph fanned the piles of ash, this along with relative humidity in the single digits made for the perfect conditions to revive the fire which spread into drought stressed vegetation.
A new wildfire started to burn in far wester Iron County on Apr. 4. According to officials, red flag fire conditions caused the Choke Cherry Fire to spread as if it were July.
As of the morning of Apr. 6, the fire has burned 700 acres and is zero percent contained. There are 5 threatened structures and some local road closures, but no current evacuations or injuries reported.
Firefighters have halted the forward progress of the fire with the help of aircraft and bulldozers. The cause of the fire is under investigation but believed to be human caused.
