West Nile Virus found in Sevier County Mosquitos

Health officials are warning residents after mosquitos with West Nile Virus were found in Sevier County.

The Central Utah Public Health Department says mosquitoes trapped near Aurora recently tested positive for the virus.

No cases of people actually becoming sick from the infected mosquitoes have been reported.

According to Health Department Deputy Director Nathan Selin, the best way to not get bit by the type of mosquito carrying the virus is to take extra precautions between dusk and dawn.

The best precautions include wearing clothing that covers your arms and legs. Insect repellent with 20%-30% DEET is also recommended.

Standing water around homes and yards should also be dumped out.

Selin says symptoms of the virus range from mild flu-like symptoms, to more severe symptoms like disorientation and paralysis.

A rash can sometimes develop, but Selin says there’s usually nothing different in the appearance of the bite.
