The IRS is warning about possible fake charity scams emerging due to Hurricane Harvey.
While there has been an enormous wave of support across the country for the victims of the hurricane, people should be aware of criminals who look to take advantage, the IRS warns.
Criminals often create sites that mimic legitimate charities or claim to be affiliated with legitimate charities in order to persuade people to send money or personal financial info.
The IRS gives these tips to help: be sure to donate to recognized charities, be wary of charities with names similar to familiar organizations, never send cash and don’t give out personal financial information like a Social Security number.
