SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The University of Utah is launching a support network and stipend program for black students pursuing its highest degrees.
The Deseret News reports the African-American Doctoral Scholars Initiative will launch this fall. It will provide eligible students with scholarships of up to $5,000 each year and access to a host of other resources.
Applications for the program are being accepted through April 14.
Program Manager Deniece Dortch says the initiative will help prepare students for competition on the job market and establish a network of mentors and peers to help them be successful.
The scholarships can cover the costs of research, travel to academic conferences and preparing doctoral dissertations.
Dortch says the University of Utah had 46 doctoral students in its medicine and law schools in fall 2015.
