Utah Tribal Leaders Press Lawmakers To Move On Bill To Protect Native Children

(Salt Lake City, UT) — Leaders of Utah’s eight sovereign nations came to the Capitol on Tuesday to push lawmakers to pass a bill to protect Native American children in adoptions and foster care placements. The bill that’s currently bottled up in the House Judiciary Committee would make provisions of the U.S. Indian Child Welfare Act state law in Utah. The federal law protects against removing Indigenous children from their tribes. Governor Spencer Cox, Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson, and Attorney General Sean Reyes all support the bill sponsored by Price Republican Representative Christine Watkins.
