(Salt Lake City, UT) — The Utah Supreme Court says lawmakers overstepped their authority when they changed a voter initiative establishing an independent redistricting commission. Yesterday’s court decision is in connection with the League of Women Voters of Utah and others’ challenge to action by the legislature. The ruling overturns a district court decision dismissing one of the counts of the original lawsuit against the legislature and returns the case to the lower court for reconsideration. In 2018, Utah voters passed Proposition 4, which established the Independent Redistricting Commission and banned partisan gerrymandering. The legislature then enacted Senate Bill 200, which reduced the redistricting commission to an advisory role.
