(Kamas, UT) — The Utah Poison Control Center is seeing a spike in calls related to a drug typically used to deworm horses. People across the country and in Utah have been using ivermectin to try and treat or prevent COVID-19, and officials say they have received over four times the number of calls about the drug than they did last year. They added that about 50-percent of those people who called needed medical attention, and some were hospitalized with serious side effects. State health officials say there is no data to suggest that this drug has any impact on COVID infections, and they urge pharmacists to question any prescriptions for the drug that is inappropriate for their clients.
