(Salt Lake City, UT) — Utah will be getting nearly 600-thousand dollars in federal grant money to protect children from lead in drinking water. The grant the Environmental Protection agency announced this week is aimed at reducing lead in drinking water in schools and child care facilities. Congress banned the use of lead pipes and fixtures in new plumbing in 1986, but millions of old lead pipes are still in place. Part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Congress passed in 2021 focuses on removing lead pipes. The CDC says no safe lead level has been identified for children.
