Utah governor gives his 1st State of the State address

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Gov. Spencer Cox outlined his priorities during his first State of the State address, including expanding funding for public education and infrastructure. The Republican governor delivered his virtual address in the House chamber of the state’s Capitol Thursday. The new governor says he significantly shortened his speech to about 15 minutes to limit potential exposure to the coronavirus. Cox lauded the state’s recent economic successes but said Utah needs to address educational inequities to disrupt intergenerational poverty in the state. He also used the speech to denounce political tribalism and division. The state’s Democratic caucus also pushed a message of unity in their response.
