(Salt Lake City, UT) — Governor Spencer Cox has signed a landmark bill that requires parents to give permission for teenagers to get social media accounts. The first-in-the-nation law Cox signed on Thursday also will impose a digital curfew, blocking sites for minors past 10:30 p.m. It will black out ads for underage accounts, and compel social media companies to allow parents access to their children’s profiles. Lawmakers say the bill is vital to protect a generation of kids suffering from a mental health crisis. Critics leveled concerns of safety and privacy, and say many of the guidelines are too hard to enforce.
