Utah DPS Sends Apology Letter To Family Over Botched Internal Investigation

(Salt Lake City, UT) — The Utah Department of Public Safety is admitting that investigators conducted a botched probe into allegations that a member of the UHP sexually assaulted a woman in 1968. In a letter sent Monday, Utah DPS Commissioner Jess Anderson apologized to the family of Valarie Clark Miller for what he called extensive and disturbing factual allegations. Miller was 13-years-old when she was assaulted, but she did not ask for an investigation until 1990. The trooper in question reportedly threatened Miller and her family to keep them quiet, but was never charged or disciplined. Valerie Miller died in 2017 of complications due to multiple sclerosis. No criminal charges can be filed because the case is too old, and Miller’s husband says he does not plan to file a lawsuit against the state.
