(Salt Lake City, UT) — The Utah Debate Commission is modifying some of its rules after a rough and rowdy debate last year between two U.S. Senate candidates. The commission began an internal review late last year after the debate between Senator Mike Lee and independent challenger Evan McMullin. The review found that Lee supporters actively worked to secure most of the tickets for the debate at Utah Valley University, leading to a disruptive environment that violated audience rules. The commission plans to ensure a peaceful environment in future debates by giving most tickets to the host university for students, faculty and staff. They also plan to work with the host schools on plans to enforce audience guidelines during debates.
