SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — An infectious disease expert says a spike of COVID-19 cases in Utah will continue if schools continue resisting state health department guidelines. Dr. Eddie Stenehjem of the Intermountain Healthcare hospital network says the recent increase in new cases was likely driven by high school and colleges resuming in-person learning. The infectious diseases specialist says it could lead to increased hospitalizations for older people in coming weeks. Stenehjem says Utah hospitalizations recently flattened. But he’s worried about young adults spreading the virus to their parents and grandparents. Over the past two weeks, the rolling average number of daily new Utah coronavirus cases has increased about 54%.
