SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Lawmakers in conservative Utah say they want to do more to prevent school shootings and will consider a “red flag” law allowing police to temporarily confiscate guns of those who might be a risk to others.
The bill from Republican Rep. Steve Handy is similar to proposals other states are debating in the wake of a school shooting in Parkland, Florida two weeks ago that killed 17.
Lawmakers on Thursday also announced the formation of a new task force to study what more can be done to prevent school shootings.
The Utah School Safety Commission includes officials who represent education, public safety, mental health and gun rights. There are no elected officials or gun-control advocates on the commission.
Republican Rep. Mike Kennedy formed the commission and says two high school students will be added to the commission.
