USOPC Chair Says Utah Winter Olympics Unlikely Until At Least 2034

(Salt Lake City, UT) — The chair of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee says Utah’s bid to host an upcoming Winter Olympics is unlikely to bear fruit until at least 2034. Susanne Lyons suggested yesterday that Salt Lake City is more of a fallback plan for the International Olympic Committee in 2030. While Salt Lake City could step up and host if no other city is ready, Lyons said the IOC would prefer that a U.S. bid for the Games wait until 2034 or beyond. She cited sponsorship issues and hard feelings over calls for a boycott of the Beijing Olympics as a barrier to Salt Lake City’s bid.
