UDOT region four donated seven tons of food Nov 7 after winning the state wide UDOT can-gineering competition.
Can-gineering is an opportunity for UDOT to apply engineering to provide food for the food bank. Each team uses cans of food to build large sculptures, then afterwards, donate the food used.
This year region four decided to build Snoopy and the Red Baron. Despite one third of their blue cans showing up green they still were able to use their 14,000 cans to win this years contest by adding a few hills to the skyline.
Kevin Kitchen, region communications manager, shared an example of engineering used saying that Snoopy is nose heavy and they had to make sure the weight of the nose was supported.
In the past six years, region four has won this contest four times and received honorable mentions twice.
Local contractors and consultants donate the money necessary to buy all the food. UDOT region four expresses their appreciation for those donations.
After the competition region four brought all of the food they used back to Richfield and donated all seven tons of it to the Central Utah Food Bank.
Laurie Huntsman, who oversees can-gineering for region four, shared what it was like when they dropped off the food.
“When we delivered it to Bonnie Thursday night she mentioned that she had said that she would shave her head if she got to 20,000 Lbs. and when we took her over 14,000 Lbs. she was a little panicked I think,” she said.
