Trial of Millard County man accused of rape moved

Criminal trials for a former assistant fire chief in Kanosh will now be taking place in Utah County.

Austin Corry, age 27, is accused of raping two women at the Kanosh Fire Station in 2015 and 2016. One of the victims was a firefighter under his command while the other was delivering food to the fire house.

The charges were originally filed in Millard County’s 4th District Court, but on Nov. 2 both cases were transferred to the 4th District Court in Utah County based on a motion filed by the state.

The reason for the cases being moved is because of concerns that it would be difficult to find a fair and impartial jury in the small community. Millard County only has a population of around 12,800 people.

“In a small county, there is always a concern, generally by a defendant, that finding jurors who are unacquainted with the matter and who, more importantly, can be fair and impartial will be difficult,” Judge Anthony Howell wrote in his decision.

The order also notes that “additionally, Mr. Corry comes from a well-known family here in Millard County.”

Scott Corry, Austin Corry’s father, was with the Millard County Sheriff’s Office for about 35 years before retiring in October. Additionally he was the fire chief in Kanosh.

Scott Corry was charged by the Utah Attorney General’s Office with obstructing justice and official misconduct in July for not reporting his son’s alleged crimes.

Scott Corry pleaded guilty in October to the misdemeanor charge while taking a plea in abeyance for the felony and a six month jail sentence was suspended.
