Tax town hall focuses on education and rural issues

Members of the Utah State Legislature are continuing their listening tour, with a better understanding of rural issues after a town hall in Richfield Friday evening.

The meeting was part of the tax restructuring and equalization task force’s listening tour–with the ultimate goal to update the state tax code.

About 150 people were in attendance with a couple dozen voicing opinions.

Those opinions ranged from concern over education, small business and healthcare costs. Several of those spoke  on the importance of making sure any changes to the tax code, didn’t end up costing more than the taxes are actually worth.

At the end of the presentations, public comments, and Q&A, the legislators also spoke on what they had learned during the evening.

Senator Lincoln Fillmore said this meeting was full of more solutions than others heald previously in Brigham City and Kearns.

Norlen Dalton from Circleville said he attended mostly for more info. After the meeting, he said he sees a constitutional amendment in order to better allocate the state budget as the best solution.

A town hall is also scheduled for Saturday in St. George and four more town hall meetings are still scheduled in July throughout the state.
