Sevier County Commission to look at bond election question for rec center

After a week of contention in Sevier County over a proposed rec center in Richfield, Sevier County Commissioners are changing course.

Sevier County Commissioners had tabled a decision to vote on a bond election for partial funding of the center Monday.

Commissioner Ralph Brown said his biggest concern was in not knowing the details of the center enough to ask voters to pay for the project.

According to a Sevier County Facebook post Thursday, those concerns and other questions have been addressed by an architect.

The commissioners are scheduling a special commission meeting on Monday August 19, at 1:30 p.m. to consider the adoption of a resolution providing for a special bond election to be held on November 5, regarding the issuance of approximately $3,550,000 General Obligation Bonds.

The Facebook post also says commissioners unanimously agreed the question should be placed in the hands of voters.

Richfield City Mayor Dave Ogden said the rec center has been in the works for several years. Both Richfield City and Sevier County will submit applications for funding with the Utah Permanent Community Impact Board (CIB) in addition to requesting funding through a bond.

Additional funding will also be sought from the Utah State Legislature and private donors, according to city leaders.

The estimated cost of the rec center is between $21-$24 million.
