On Oct. 22, Sevier County Sheriffs Office was dispatched to a capsized boat at Fishlake. According to Sevier County Sheriff Nathan Curtis, “a father, Christopher Winslow age 36 from Cedar City, and son had been fishing with a friend. At 3:30 am they dropped the friend off and the father and son headed back out to fish some more.”
Around 5:15 am the boat Christopher and his son were in capsized and according to reports neither were wearing life jackets at the time. They attempted to call 911 but the call was not able to make a good connection and was dropped.
Christopher and his son were holding onto the boat and at some point the son succumbed to the exposure, let go of the boat and began sinking. His father swam down to bring his son back to the surface, but was unable to.
Around 7:30 am some fishermen could hear someone yelling for help. They located Christopher and were able to get him to shore. He was taken to Sevier Valley hospital to be treated for exposure and hypothermia.
The UPS Dive team, Utah Fire Marshall’s office, Utah State Parks Rangers and Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office were called in to search for the son and on Oct. 23, at approximately 8:30 pm they were able to retrieve the body and bring it to the surface.
Curtis later shared in a statement “I want to thank all our partners from the Utah DPS dive team, Utah State Parks, Utah Fire Marshall’s office, and the Wasatch County Sheriff’s search and rescue team. They provided resources that we do not have in our county and because of their help we were able to bring this young man home to his family to hopefully provide some comfort in this tragedy. I want to thank the Sevier County Search and Rescue and EMT volunteers for their support and response to this mission. And all the search and rescue teams who reached out to offer help, you truly make difference.” He and the Sheriff’s Office also shared their sincerest condolences to the Winslow family.
