Sanpete County is now the sixth county in Utah to take drugmakers and distributors to court over the toll of the opioid epidemic.

In their court filing, the Sanpete County Attorney’s Office accuses pharmaceutical companies of misleading residents by using a “publicity machine” to convince them opioids were safe and posed little risk of becoming addictive.

The county is seeking compensation for providing care and treatment for addiction, as well as public safety costs associated with overdose cases.
