SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Democrats are railing against a Republican running to be the top election official in Utah’s most populous county who has a history of claiming the 2020 election was stolen. The Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday that Salt Lake County Clerk candidate Goud Maragani had in public forums said the election was stolen. Maragani previously tried to distance himself from election fraud claims, saying explicitly on his campaign website that he does not believe the last election was stolen. Maragani’s rhetoric parallels changes in messaging of other candidates running in 2022 who have distanced themselves from their previous fraud claims as the general election nears.
