(Washington, DC) — Utah Senator Mitt Romney wants longshot Republican candidates to drop out of the presidential race sooner rather than later. In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Romney called on Republican donors to push noncompetitive presidential candidates out of the race by February. Romney wants to avoid a crowded primary that could easily hand the contest to former President Donald Trump, who is the dominant candidate in the race so far. Romney has been a frequent critic of Trump and was the only Republican senator to vote to convict Trump in his first impeachment trial. Romney and six other GOP senators voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial.
