(Washington, DC) — Utah Senator Mitt Romney says Donald Trump “brought these charges upon himself” following Trump’s indictment for his alleged mishandling of classified materials. In a statement Friday, the Republican said Trump refused to return the classified documents when given numerous opportunities to do so. He said it seems the Justice Department afforded Trump the time and opportunity to avoid charges that would not generally have been afforded to others. Reports say the charges include willful retention of national defense secrets, obstruction of justice and conspiracy. Trump is the first former president to be indicted on criminal charges.
