Heavy rainfall on Sept. 1 lead to flooding in Hanksville. According to a press release from Hanksville officials, several homes and businesses took on excessive amounts of water and many cars and camp trailers were damaged or swept away by the floodwaters.
Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue responded immediately to help with flood operations and Utah Highway Patrol troopers also helped with diverting drivers away from floodwaters. Personnel from Emery and Sevier counties also responded to help with cleanup efforts.
At one point a 500 gallon propane tank was carried away by flood waters causing it to release a cloud of propane. Hazmat crews were unable to get to the tank due to flooding, but individuals on scene were able to shut off the tank and secure it.
The extent of the damage will take a few days to evaluate, but all citizens were reported safe and accounted for, including visitors. A Go Fund Me page has been created by Mayor Jeffren Pei to help with damage costs.
