President Monson, Elder Hales Not to Attend LDS General Conference

SALT LAKE CITY (KSL News)-Per reports from KSL TV and news radio in Salt Lake City and LDS Living Magazine, a pair of prominent LDS Church leaders cannot attend general conference this weekend.

The reports state that Church President, Thomas S. Monson, who turned 90 August 21, and Quorum of Twelve Apostles member Elder Robert D. Hales, will not be attending the semi-annual general conference September 30 and October 1 at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City.

Monson cited a statement released by the Church in May stating that he would no longer attend regular meetings, as the cause for his absence.

Additionally, the 85-year-old Hales was admitted to the hospital “several days ago” for treatment of “pulmonary and other conditions.”

This was per a statement from Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints spokesman Eric Hawkins released Thursday.

Hawkins said Hales’ doctors have determined he should not participate in conference activities this weekend.

Monson also did not attend the Church’s women’s session of general conference September 23.

Monson was sustained as the 16th president of the Church February 3, 2008, following the death of his predecessor, Gordon B. Hinckley.

Hales was sustained as a member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles April 2, 1994.
