(Page, AZ) — The National Park Service says a popular geologic feature in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area has collapsed. The frequently visited “Double Arch” collapsed last Thursday. Also known as the “Toilet Bowl,” “Crescent Pool,” and “Hole in the Roof,” the geologic feature was formed from 190-million-year-old Navajo sandstone. The park service says they don’t know what caused the collapse, but changing water levels and erosion from wave action are suspected of contributing to the arch’s demise. No injuries were reported.
