Police laud new law allows immigrants to become officers

OGDEN, Utah (AP) — Since Utah lawmakers passed legislation earlier this year allowing immigrants to become police for the first time, the Ogden Police Department has received a number of applicants. Chief Eric Young tells the Standard-Examiner sees the change as a means to help with recruitment of new officers, a big issue in Ogden and many departments. Seth Cawley with the Weber State University Police Department says there were times in the past when immigrant applicants to the Weber State police force had to be turned back because they didn’t meet the prior requirement that officers in Utah be U.S. citizens.
