Two are recovering after a police chase ended in a rollover accident Thursday afternoon in Richfield.
Richfield City Police Chief Trent Lloyd says the car was stolen and the chase began on Main Street. That chase quickly escalated to high speeds onto I-70.
Lloyd says the driver of the stolen car headed Westbound on I-70 and crossed into the other lane, toward oncoming traffic. Police called off their chase to avoid causing an accident while the suspects went into the other lanes.
After the suspects turned back and started back toward Richfield after reaching Elsinore, they turned off the freeway in Richfield and drove through a fence.
Lloyd says it’s a miracle they didn’t roll after going through that fence. But down the road as they continued, they did roll and went through a fence off Airport Road.
The man and women in the stolen vehicle were take to the hospital with minor injuries.
Lloyd says these two are known to them for their long criminal history. The man has a huge history of stealing cars, leading police on chases and assaulting officers.
“He’s got one of the longest criminal histories I’ve ever seen,” Lloyd says.
Lloyd says before the chase began, officers were discussing how to get this couple out of town once they learned they were in Richfield.
“We said we’re going to end up with a stolen car or worse,” Lloyd says.
Lloyd also says a semi truck was almost hit while the couple was driving in the opposite lane of traffic on I-70.
“We’re extremely lucky no one else got hurt,” Lloyd says.
Lloyd says the keys were left in the car when it was stolen. He asks that people please “stop doing that.”
“It’s a pretty good theft deterrent to lock your car and take your keys,” Lloyd says.
