Paiute Tribe Confirms Children’s Bodies Found At Southern Utah Site

(Panguitch, UT) — The Paiute Indian Tribe is confirming the discovery of the bodies of 12 Native American children in an unmarked cemetery in southern Utah. Researchers from Utah State University conducted a study of a historic boarding school in Panguitch where tribal children were taken between 1904 and 1909. Using ground-penetrating radar, the researchers were able to confirm that children had been buried at the site in unmarked graves. The tribe announced yesterday that the remains belonged to 12 Paiute children forced to attend the school. Tribal leaders said they were still working with descendants of the children to determine how to honor their memory.
