Oregon President Condemns Fan Behavior During BYU Game

(Eugene, OR) — The president of the University of Oregon is blasting fans of his school’s football team following profane chants made during Saturday’s game against BYU. President Patrick Phillips issued a letter to university supporters saying he was angered and disgusted by the chant. The letter reminded fans that some members of the Oregon football team are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Phillips asked how those players must feel knowing their own fans were telling them they weren’t welcome because of their religious beliefs. BYU officials issued a statement yesterday calling the chant “isolated behavior” and thanking Oregon officials for their apologies.
