Official: Utah sergeant could face charges in fatal shooting

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah prosecutor says a police sergeant was not justified in his involvement in a fatal shooting in Salt Lake City last summer and could face criminal charges. KUTV reports charges have not been filed against West Valley City Police Sgt. Jason Vincent, but the Salt Lake County district attorney says the matter “remains open.” Vincent was part of a federal law enforcement task force pursuing a man who was wanted for parole violation. Vincent and another officer shot at the man after he ran from police in August 2020. The second officer will not face charges.
