A man was taken into custody on Sept. 7 in Deseret who is believed to be connected to an attempted bank robbery in Monroe. According to a probable cause statement filed by a Sevier County Sheriff’s detective in the case, Michael Douglas Hathaway, age 43, allegedly walked in to a bank and handed a teller a note saying, “don’t look or tell anyone or else I’ll shoot.” The teller allegedly froze and Hathaway ran out of the bank without taking any money. He was identified through surveillance video collected from the Utah Independent bank, detectives also learned that he had bragged to acquaintances that he had robbed multiple banks in northern Utah. According to Sevier County Sheriff Nathan Curtis, the U.S. Marshals Office and DPS SERT team were involved in the arrest due to threats involving homemade explosives. Hathaway was taken into custody, then taken to the hospital before being booked into the Millard County Jail. He is facing multiple charges in multiple counties.
