LDS Church Publishes Final Volume Of Joseph Smith Papers

(Salt Lake City, UT) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints published the final volume of the Joseph Smith Papers on Tuesday, the 179th anniversary of the church founder’s death. The 27-volume collection has been called the “lunar mission” of historical church research, reflecting 22 years of documenting, filing, writing, and editing. The volume published Tuesday includes 104 records that include the official announcement of Smith’s martyrdom on June 27th 1844 and the last six weeks of his life. Smith’s letters to his friends and his wife, Emma Smith, suggest he expected to be acquitted of treason charges on which he was jailed and that she should not have “any fear” of harm coming to him. The 38-year-old Smith and his elder brother Hyrum were murdered by a mob that stormed the jail in Carthage, Illinois where they and two other Church leaders were being held.
