SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah judge has ruled that a teenager charged with helping his friend plot to kill a 14-year-old girl will be tried in adult court.
Juvenile Court judge Angela Fonnesbeck said Monday that while the evidence shows that the teen didn’t shoot Deserae Turner, he did help his friend commit the crime.
Turner nearly died after being shot in the head and left in a ditch in the small northern Utah town of Smithfield.
Prosecutors have said they want the boy’s case in adult court due to the severity of the crime.
The defense has said he should stay in the juvenile court system because of his age and lack of criminal history.
A similar hearing for the alleged shooter is expected to start Monday.
The Associated Press is not naming the boys because they are juveniles.
