Judge overturns Utah death row inmate’s murder conviction

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A federal judge has overturned the conviction of a death row inmate, saying he received ineffective counsel during his trial. The Deseret News reports a U.S. District judge ruled Von Lester Taylor was not adequately represented in his 1991 trial that led to a death sentence. The ruling says Taylor’s guilty plea was unconstitutional and must be invalidated. Authorities say Taylor and Edward Deli shot the owners of a cabin multiple times in December 1990. Kay Tiede and her mother, Beth Potts, were killed. Rolf Tiede survived despite being shot in the head and doused with gasoline.
