(Salt Lake City, UT) — A House committee has rejected a so-called “safe storage” law that would require gun owners to keep their firearms locked away from children and people who aren’t allowed to have guns. The House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee voted 7-to-4 Monday afternoon against Midvale Democrat Andrew Stoddard’s bill. Stoddard said his bill wasn’t aimed at punishing gun owners, rather it targeted people he called “irresponsible” gun owners whose firearms get into the hands of the wrong people because of negligence.
