(Salt Lake City, UT) — A bill that would close all abortion clinics in Utah by 2024 is moving forward in the Legislature. The bill the House Judiciary Committee passed on Wednesday would allow only hospitals to provide abortions, and they would be under strict guidelines. The bill sponsored by Clearfield Republican Representative Karianne Lisonbee would stop licensing abortion clinics in May and would ban the operation of all abortion clinics beginning in January, 2024. The bill also would allow abortions for children younger than 12 only for pregnancies caused by incest. Exemptions for rape and incest would be allowed only for pregnancies that haven’t reached 18 weeks. The bill now goes to the House floor.
