Gas Explosion in Monroe Injures Woman

A Monroe couple is recovering after a gas explosion damaged their home and injured one of them April 18.

Emergency services were sent to a home on Sierra Vista in Monroe to respond to a gas line fire and to help an injured woman.

Home owner Steve Rosenzweig, 68, Monroe, stated that his wife was in the kitchen getting ready to serve dinner when heard an explosion. Rosenzweig ran to the kitchen and found his wife on the floor and a fire burning behind the stove. He raced outside and shut off the propane which put out the fire. Steve helped his wife Haydee Rosenzwieg, 71, Monroe, out to the front porch. The ambulance later took Haydee to the Sevier Valley Hospital where she received treatment for a dislocated shoulder.

State Fire Marshall Troy Mills says a frayed extension cord arced with the stove’s gas line, burning a hole in it. The extension cord may have been chewed up by mice.

Sevier County Sheriff Nate Curtis says home is habitable despite the damage to the stove and the wall from the fire.
