On July 8, just after 2:00 p.m., Millard County Dispatch received notification of a fire near Halfway Hill between Fillmore and Meadow in Millard County. During the efforts of suppressing and investigating the fire, Millard County Deputies and State and Federal Fire Investigators developed leading information that the fire was human-caused. Through physical evidence, individuals were identified and interviews revealed these individuals had established a recreational campfire which was not properly extinguished before being left unattended.
On Saturday, July 9, four people were arrested for an abandoned fire: Michael Patti, Derri Dewolfe, Talon Kessler and Tyler Smith all of Millard County. Under Utah law those who start a wildfire are responsible for its management and complete extinguishment.
As of the evening of July 10, the Halfway Hill fire has burned 7,000 acres.
