BRIAN HEAD, Utah (AP)-Per a report from Lauren Steinbrecher of Fox 13 in Salt Lake City, Wednesday night Garfield County and Brian Head authorities confirmed highway closures and evacuation orders will be lifted in the next few days for certain areas affected by the Brian Head Fire.
Garfield County Sheriff Danny Perkins reported from a Wednesday evening meeting at Panguitch High School that it is anticipated the closure will be lifted on S.R. 143 from Panguitch to the Panguitch Lake General Store and Panguitch Lake Resort, about 23 miles southwest of Panguitch Thursday morning.
The rest of S.R. 143 (Panguitch Lake to Parowan) will remain closed but crews will shuttle residents to and from their cabins.
Later on, Brian Head town manager Bret Howser said the evacuation at Brian Head should be lifted by 7:00 am MDT Friday morning.
Despite S.R. 143 being closed between Brian Head and Parowan, the town is still accessible from S.R. 148 which connects Brian Head to Cedar Breaks and ultimately, Cedar City.
Authorities also said they hope to get containment on the southern edge of the blaze by Sunday.
Fire spokesperson Sierra Hellstrom said the north side of the fire is continuing to grow, despite the containment on the south side.
As of Wednesday night, the fire had reportedly scorched 54,202 acres and is currently 15 percent contained.
