Cox Will Sign Social Media Bill Restricting Minors

(Salt Lake City, UT) — Governor Spencer Cox will sign a bill requiring social media companies to verify that users are 18 or older to open an account. Cox told reporters on Thursday he “absolutely” will sign Senate Bill 152 and is willing to face any legal challenges. Under the bill, Utahns younger than 18 would only be able to open a social media account with a parent or guardian’s permission. Cox said he’ll be working with social media companies and third-party verification over the next year to work out details of implementing the restrictions.
