(Salt Lake City, UT) — Governor Cox is taking aim at a Utah company that has been blamed for a significant portion of the state’s air pollution. The governor asked the EPA to change the boundaries of an air pollution non-attainment area to include the section of Tooele County where U.S. Magnesium operates. A non-attainment area is a geographic region that does not meet the EPA’s primary standard for pollution. A letter sent by the governor yesterday notes that the state has found it difficult to meet Clean Air Act obligations to reduce air pollution. A recent study found U.S. Magnesium was responsible for as much as 25-percent of northern Utah’s air pollution problems.
